Urinary leakage is far more common than many women realize. In fact, nearly half of all women experience some degree of urinary incontinence during their lifetime, whether due to childbirth, aging, hormonal changes, or increased pressure on the bladder during everyday activities. While it can feel frustrating or even embarrassing, urinary leakage is a medical condition with effective treatment options available. At Augusta Urology Associates, our team works closely with patients to understand their symptoms and lifestyle, then recommends personalized treatment solutions designed to restore comfort, confidence, and quality of life.
One option we offer is Bulkamid®, a urethral bulking treatment used to address stress urinary incontinence. Bulkamid is a water-based gel that is injected into the wall of the urethra to help improve the body’s natural ability to prevent urine leakage. The gel integrates with surrounding tissue and remains in place over time without causing adverse reactions.
The procedure itself is quick and minimally invasive. During treatment, the physician places four small injections into the urethral wall, adding volume that helps the urethra close more effectively and prevent urine from leaking from the bladder during normal daily activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising.
Many women choose Bulkamid as an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures because it offers an effective treatment with minimal disruption to daily life. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, takes about 10–15 minutes, and requires very little downtime. Because it does not involve incisions or implanted mesh, the risk of serious complications is low. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities within 24 hours, making it a convenient and practical option for many women seeking relief from stress urinary incontinence.
