Prostate biopsies are a quick, 5 minute procedure performed to obtain tissue from the prostate to diagnose or rule out prostate cancer. This procedures can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s desired level of comfort.
Preparation for the procedure: you will be started on a antibiotic twice daily starting the day before the procedure for a total of 3 days. You will be asked to perform a fleets enema the morning of the biopsy.
After a biopsy, it is normal to see blood in your stool in urine for a days to weeks after the procedure. There is a small risk of infection with the procedure which negated by the antibiotics you will be given for the procedure.
You will get the results of your biopsy 10-14 days after the procedure after a trained pathologist has analyzed all the specimen.
